Persons With Disabilities

Persons with disabilities are often stuck in the cycle of poverty: having a disability adds to the risk of poverty, and the conditions of poverty increase the risk of disability (Elwan, 1999). A disproportionate number of persons with disabilities in Canada live in poverty, and they are more likely to face barriers to employment, education, and social participation. This section highlights the unique voices and strengths of persons with disabilities, and the systemic barriers that prevent full participation in Canadian society.
